Experience:
Virginia Small is a communications consultant and an award-winning writer, editor,
photographer, and poet. She served as senior editor for Fine Gardening, and as
director of public relations for Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota,
Florida. Her journalistic and photographic work has appeared in many publications
including The New York Times, USA Today, the Sarasota
Herald-Tribune, and the
St. Petersburg Times. She has received awards for writing and photography from
the Garden Writers Association and Print magazine, as well as awards for communications
materials from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Her
longtime interest in design has led her to write many articles about garden design,
and to present programs on landscape design history, successful planting design,
and the creative process. One of her favorite team associations was serving on
a task force to design a liberal arts curriculum during her tenure at Ringling
School. Virginia has her B.A. in Communications from Dominican College.
Current Projects:
Among Virginia’s current projects is writing a book on gardens of the Berkshires,
as well as ongoing communications and strategic planning for a nature center.
She also continues to write for national publications and to collaborate on creating
communications that inspire, inform, and solve specific problems.
Insights into Virginia:
Beauty and art inspires Virginia. She loves to garden, dance, and play hand drums,
and she enjoys encouraging the creative pursuits of others, especially her twenty-something
nieces and nephews.
